KUCHING (April 23): TotalEnergies and the Sarawak government have expressed optimism over deeper cooperation focused on energy transition, strategic investments and long-term sustainability goals for the state.
The understanding was reached during a meeting held on the sidelines of the Food and Hospitality Asia (FHA) 2026 Expo in Singapore yesterday, which saw participation from 19 Sarawak-based companies.
Sarawak was represented by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment as well as Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development.
He said the engagement aimed to explore stronger partnership in advancing energy transition and sustainable economic development in Sarawak.
“Discussions underscored a mutual commitment to leveraging Sarawak’s rich natural resources and TotalEnergies’ global expertise across key energy sectors,” said Awang Tengah.
Key areas covered included renewable energy, oil and gas development, and emerging low-carbon technologies.
On renewables, both sides emphasised the expansion of green energy sources, including hydro, solar and biomass, with TotalEnergies expressing interest in supporting ground-mounted and floating solar projects across the region.
Discussions on oil and gas focused on Sarawak’s substantial reserves and its strategic roadmap for domestic utilisation and export, with TotalEnergies reaffirming its commitment to upstream activities.
The talks also explored sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), with Sarawak outlining its long-term decarbonisation plans.
Awang Tengah also highlighted TotalEnergies’ joint venture with Masdar to accelerate renewable energy development in the Asia Pacific, identifying Malaysia as a priority market.
“This partnership is expected to enhance investment flows and technical expertise in Sarawak’s renewable energy landscape,” he said.
Also present were Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, advisor Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais, permanent secretary Datu Lester Matthew, InvestSarawak chief executive officer Timothy Ong, and senior ministry officials. – The Borneo Post
